What Grub Disaster Looks Like
1/13/04
OK, so most folks have heard about grubs of Japanese beetles, but they probably never saw grub damage on their own. Well, in the attached photograph taken on a nearby lawn in September, 2003, you don’t have to guess anymore. This lawn in full sun was a basket case in April, 2003, and a disaster five months later. The owner decided not to spend any money for maintenance of the lawn in 2003. So, grubs ate three square meals a day, and would have destroyed every bunch of tall fescue were it not for abundant rains throughout 2003 that spared some of the grass. In the next few months, the lawn must be de-thatched of dead grass and seeded, not to mention the application of pesticides to control overwintering grubs and any offspring from adult Japanese beetles later on. Granular Dylox must be applied in late March-early April to destroy overwintering grubs, then Merit the first days of June for summer control of future grubs. Now, take a look at what grubs can and will do if they have their way! How do you explain this wreck of a lawn to relatives and friends who come to visit?
